Target was R.R. bridge north of Parma, Italy at F 1500.
I was leading Red flight and lt. Pape was flying#3 position on me.Upon reaching the target it was found to be knoocked out by previous bombing.
I immediatly led the flightto the secondary target, a road bridge at L 0499. After bombing, the squadron split up in individual flights for straffing.
I led Red flight to the north west of targetwhere we found several cars and trucks.
As we circled the townof Santa Caterina I saw it. Pape peel off to straffle an M/T trailer in the town. Upon pulling up, the rightwing of his aircraft struck a church steeple throwing it out of control. he tried to get it under control after his collision but was too low and the aircraft hit the ground.
His speed upon impact was approximately 150 MPH the aircraft exploded scattering it over an area for approximately five hundred yards square.
Icircled the area for approximately five minutes and there was no possible way lt. pape could have escaped. Red flight then returned to base.

Lt. Garwin C. Pape was flyng Red Three position in a flight of Twelve aircraft intending to bomb a Railroad bridge t F 1500. The bridge had already been damaged so flight Leader decided to bomb road bridge at L 0499.
After bombing bridge Red Flight went down on the deck to straffle M/T. We Straffled one car east of Santa Caterina and after pulling up off target I saw lt.PAPE Diving down on M/T trailer in center of Santa Caterina.
On Pulling out of his straffing run Lt. Pape struck a church steeple in center of town, causing him to lose control of his aircraft momentarily and was too low to affect a pull out and mushed into the ground. His guns were firing when he hit the ground so i think he was not hurt after hitting the church steeple and was trying to pull out of the dive and squeesing the trigger at the same time.
Lt. Pape's aircraft explodedupon hittingthe ground. there was no possibility of his escaping. Rest of flight circled spot for five minutes. There was no flack in the immediate area.
The Weather was cloudy with Overcast at approximately 14000 feet.
I was number two in Red Flight led by Major WELLS.
